Paul reconnects with an old friend, Hardie Rankin, to fish for sharks off an isolated island. Their plan to chum the ocean to lure 2000-pound mako sharks faces opposition from a group of Californian beatniks who are shooting an underwater movie and believe the chumming endangers their project. Hardie, a self-made millionaire on a strict schedule and with a thirst for adventure, finds himself at odds with the group, who hold a deep-seated distrust of anyone over 30.
Paul befriends the group's lone female member and begins to suspect that the motives of these hipsters have more to do with their recreational drug use than genuine concern for the Caribbean reef's ecology. The tension between Hardie's adventurous spirit and the beatniks' resistance escalates as Paul navigates the conflicting interests.
