U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed staff at the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius, Lithuania on Monday.
He spoke about the principles at stake in the Ukraine conflict and also highlighted the importance of remembering the human costs of the war.
"What's also at stake, what gets lost sometimes as we're talking about these big principles are the individual lives and futures that are at stake," he said.
"We see the images on TV... families torn apart. Each and every one of these principles that we talk about, it has a real person behind it in one way or another," he added.
Blinken has been meeting with officials in Europe to discuss NATO's response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
