Welcome to My Video Description,
Bharti Airtel will fully migrate its 5G mobile broadband services to the standalone (SA) mode in the next 3-to-4 years as demand picks up and as more 4G users upgrade to the next-gen service, the telco’s senior management told analysts at the Sunil Mittal-led telco’s fiscal second-quarter earnings call.
Airtel’s leadership, though, told analysts that the telco is in no hurry to migrate its 5G mobile services to the SA mode as it will need to spend another Rs 30,000-40,000 crore on sub-GHz 5G spectrum for this.
once this happens, Airtel will become the second pan-India 5G carrier after Reliance Jio to deliver the next-gen consumer mobile service nationally via the SA mode, which is reckoned to offer a superior 5G voice and data experience compared to the current NSA (non-standalone) variant that uses existing 4G network infrastructure and airwave resources.
Only Airtel’s rival, Jio, which opted for a 5G SA network from the very outset, has super-efficient sub-GHz airwaves in the 700 MHz band that is being used for 5G. In fact, Jio’s 5G network infrastructure or cell sites transmit only 5G signals. Industry experts say that while the SA mode offers a superior version of 5G, the handset ecosystem is yet to fully evolve.
BofA Securities, which also participated in Airtel’s Q2FY25 earnings call Tuesday, said Airtel’s decision “to entirely move from NSA to an SA network on cellular” will be a function of the load on spectrum band(s) and happen over the next 3-4 years.
But starting December 2024, Airtel will start running its 5G-based fixed wireless service (FWA) services in the SA mode. But in the near-term, it will stick to the NSA mode for consumer 5G services.
