You know there's something significant going on when an artist describes their new album as a mix of "power and destruction, benevolence, and femininity." So take a sec to absorb what Maisie Peters is putting down on 'The Good Witch,' the Brit upstart's second full-length. Much of it is piercing, dramatic, and purposeful, even when it's floating on the kind of pop-rock that makes a point of stressing it's amiable side. As a few of the tracks fly by - "Coming of Age" and "Lost The Breakup" for sure - a sweet mix of CharlieXCX and Taylor Swift start to bubble up. Here's an ABBA fan who started writing poetry and short stories as a kid, grabbing a mate's guitar at the age of 12 and figuring out how sing her own thoughts. After several singles and one album (2021's 'You Signed Up For This'), those thoughts have developed into insightful quips. "Nobody actually happy and healthy has actually acted so desperate to prove it," she sings in "Watch." Guess Ed Sheeran thought something of her development. He signed her to his label and had her open a string of his stadium dates. Check the off-hand passion she brings to "Therapy" and "Run" in our studio performances. The charm is front and center, standing right next to the craft.
