Vintage Hungarian Hand Painted Wooden Traditional Folk Art Male Figural Pencil Holder with Sharpener
So Hungarian folk art is known for its bright colors, bold floral designs that can vary widely in form encompassing many styles of flowers, varied materials - as well as preservation of traditional styles, techniques and technologies - and regional variations that add diversity. I really like how this little piece really ties all that together. From the gorgeous blue background color - a nod to their fame for blue dyed crafts, to the vibrantly bold hand painted florals designs on the traditionally dressed little man, to the very fact that they took the idea of a traditional figurine or wooden doll - decided to make it have a function or a purpose, and so created a unique pencil holder with the sharpener on bottom. It’s innovative while still keeping to tradition and helping it continue in a functional way. They did this with other purposes as well - I have seen salt and pepper shakers, wine bottle stoppers, chess pieces, and one of my personal wish list items is a variation as a vanity box set that has a piece very similar to this to hold make up brushes with other pieces that open like boxes to hold hair pins and smaller perfume bottle stoppers. I really think versatile and functional little things like this can be a great way of keeping a cultural or traditional art alive.
