The Palace itself is the best example in Scotland of French-influenced Renaissance style architecture. Commenced in the 1500's by King James IV, the palace was built to accommodate the royal court when it came to hunt. This could be a large number of people.
Mary, Queen of Scot's was a frequent visitor to the palace. While the palace was being occupied by Oliver Cromwell's troops in 1654, a fire broke out that destroyed the East Range, the palace then generally fell into disrepair. In the 19th century extensive restoration work was started.
