Castle Campbell was previously known as the Castle of Glooms before its ownership passed to Colin Campbells, through marriage, who changed the castles name and was the first of many Campbells to live there over the next 200 years.
Castle Campbell is located in Clackmannanshire and can be found tucked away high above Dollar Glen, and even though not originally a Campbell Castle, is mostly known for being the clans Lowland stronghold. Historical figures that are known to have visited Castle Campbell include both Mary, Queen of Scots, and John Knox, Scotland’s Reformation leader and founder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. The latter preached from a pulpit on the castle grounds that is still there today.
Castle Campbell is one of the best-preserved tower house castles in Scotland and if you ever visit the castle for yourself then keep an eye out for the well maintained terraced gardens and the original 15-century tower.
