This is the Nikka Pure Malt Red Japanese whisky, and it’s a nice, sweet little number!
It’s called a “pure malt” because it’s all malt whiskey, but not all from the same distillery, however, there might be some non-Japanese whisky blended into this one. It is one of a series of pure malts by Nikka whisky, and it is meant to highlight the malt whiskey from the Miyagikyo Distillery.
The Miyagikyo Distillery makes Nikka’s light to medium-peated whiskey, while the Yoichi Distillery makes their medium to heavily-peated whiskey. They then use these whiskeys to make a variety of different profiles, blends and final products. This one, the Red, is mostly Miyagikyo, with a small amount of Yoichi, meaning it’s going to be lighter and fruitier than the “Black” pure malt.
It comes in at 43%, with no indication of age, cask types, if colour has been added, or if it’s been chill filtered, so let’s just dive right in!
Nikka Pure Malt Red tasting notes:
Nose:
There’s a lot of sweet biscuit malt, with an undercurrent of peat, it’s quite fruity, with caramel apples citrus, baking spices and vanilla
Palate:
The palate again leads with biscuit malt, with some spicy cinnamon and nutmeg, as well as some smoky peat. On the second sip, there was more fruity notes, with lemon and grapefruit citrus peel
Finish:
The citrus and caramel hang on a decent amount of time, and after taking a breath, the peat reappears.
Overall, this is a nice little whiskey, it’s sweet and fruity, with a hint of smoke and nicely enjoyable. However, I did get it at the distillery for less than €30, and I’ve seen it on sale outside of Japan at closer to €60, which I think would be a bit too expensive for this one.

I'm a total whiskey nerd and this channel is all about Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Rye, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey. I'm always on the hunt for the best whiskey and love making whiskey review videos. My passion is for Irish whiskey, but I'm open to looking for the best Bourbon or the best scotch too!
I'm an Irishman, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying whiskeys from all around the world, from Kentucky bourbon to Japanese single malts. I also love making cocktails, especially whiskey cocktails (or whisky cocktails) and really enjoy taking a classic recipe and adding my own twist to it, or making simple, 3 ingredient cocktails
