Developed for the U.S. Army service pistol trials of 1954, the Smith & Wesson Model 39 is an alloy framed, semi-automatic handgun. It was the first generation of semi-automatic handguns available to the public from Smith & Wesson. The Model 39 is chambered for the 9mm Luger cartridge and features an 8 round magazine capacity.
