(14 Jan 2020) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday said intelligence-sharing relationships with European allies who use Chinese tech in their 5G infrastructure are "potentially at risk".
Pompeo was taking questions at the Silicon Valley Leadership Group at The Commonwealth Club in San Francisco.
On North Korea, he said the US was still trying to convince leader Kim Jong Un "to move away from the nuclear weapons as their great wall of protection", adding the issue is "unlikely to be resolved without the Chinese government also weighing in".
On Iran, Pompeo said that TV images of crowds of hundreds of thousands of people seen on the streets for the funeral of Qasem Soleimani, the general killed in a US strike, were misleading because Iran is "an authoritarian space and the resources of state are dedicated to putting people in the streets".
He added: "The regime is fundamentally treating the Iranian people unfairly, I think most Iranian people know that."
