The January Effect is a stock market trend that kicks off near the end of each calendar year and repeats.

Throughout the year, ‘bagholders’ that overstay in their positions contribute to downtrending markets. Before filing their taxes, some of these investors start ‘tax selling,’ a strategy in which investors sell their non-profitable stocks. During January, many people buy back these stocks in hopes that they will bounce someday.
