In the 'good old days' many distillery workers either used to help themselves or be given whisky. At Glengoyne, workers were given 3 fingers at 9am, 12pm and 3pm through the working day. Those that did not want anymore kept the rest they did not finish in tea pots hence the name 'teapot dram'.
Most distilleries gave away new make spirit or something similar but not Glengoyne. Glengoyne gave workers young whisky from sherry casks.... no wonder everybody wanted to work there!
Glengoyne have produced a very sherry rich bomb of a whisky that is bottled at cask strength (typically late 50s) and is one of the most satisfying whiskies we have ever had the pleasure of tasting. In the video, Batch 10 is now discussed with distillery manager Robbie Hughes.
The teapot dram is released annually and only available from the distillery shop or online. It retails at an RRP of £149 for 2024. 3500 are made until the next batch release which will be in 2026. This should be enough to tide us over until then. It certainly makes its way onto the staple drinking shelves of many & is designed to be a drinker rather than a collection piece since so many are made and will be there with similar make ups throughout the years.
