What are biosolids?
Biosolids are the leftover organic matter recycled from sewage. They can be used in agriculture, depending on their quality. In the past, farmers used to use the material as a fertilizer for their crops. Biosolids that are used in farming practices, are usually treated to help prevent disease causing pathogenic organisms from spreading to the public through food crop consumption.
Some sewage sludge can not qualify for agricultural use due to the presence of heavy metals, PFAS, or other toxic chemicals.
According to Wikipedia, approximately 7.1 million dry tons of biosolids were produced (or generated) in 2004 from only 16,500 facilities in the US.
At my facility, I produce two 30cubicfoot bins worth of biosolids each month and this quantity is always rising as our influent flows continue to increase.
