Christianity has troubled history in Japan as it was completely outlawed from 1614 to 1873. Some early converts refused to abandon their faith and practiced it in secret. They're known as 隠れキリシタン 'Kakure Kirishitan' (Hidden Christians). They camouflaged their worship by combining their Christian faith with elements of Buddhism and Shinto, and they had to maintain underground a lot.
Even today, we could still have a significant number of 'Kakure Kirishitan', especially the younger ones.
