To do this conversion, I got the RM motor mount (MZ216) and an RM t-plate from KM Racing. The chassis I'm starting with is a standard MR-03 MM mount for the Audi R8. Remove the diff first.
Unscrew the motor wires from the terminals on the main board. Unscrew the top shock from the pod as well as the t-plate at the bottom. I couldn't find any instruction for the RM pod. The tricky part will be deciding the right combination of motor spacers for the pinion. Reuse the 3x6x2.5 bearings from the MM pod.
The larger of the spacer goes to the back of the RM pod. One is labeled 1.0 and the other 1.5. Since I'm using a 8T pinion, let's try the 1.0 spacer first. I assume 1.5 would be for the 9T. Let's test the gear mesh now before going further. It looks good. Behind the motor cover, I put in the 1.0 spacer. This seems to hold the motor in place perfectly. I didn't have this at first.
To get to 90mm with the RM pod, I need a longer t-plate than the usual ones for MM or MM2. I got a KM one which was cheap. Here's I'm lining up a 90mm wheelbase length to determine where exactly to mount the t-plate. RM can also do 86mm.
Next, I need to choose one of the provided shock mount for 90mm. The RM motor pod is done! I really love Kyosho's modular motor pod design for MR-03. It's very versatile and fun. Now it's just a matter of attaching the pod back to the chassis.
I must say the chassis with an RM pod looks great. Yes, it shifts a lot of weight to the rear, compared to the common MM pod. But the center of gravity is still kept pretty low.
Let's see the 90mm chassis in action. It's running the Subaru 2002 body with 1.5 offset front and -1.0 offset wide tires rear. In many ways, this chassis is a throwback to the MR-01 days when most cars were shorter at 90mm and rear mounted. Today most MR-03 Kyosho sells have a 98mm wheelbase with a wide front. It's accepted as the best for racing on RCP track. While I understand the performance reasoning, I think it's really too bad we don't see the diversity of chassis types anymore. It's interesting to try something different even if it's not the fastest thing out there. I enjoy the process of testing it and how to get the most out of it. I'm glad to drive this 90mm car around the track. It certainly drives different vs the 98mm MR-03 or GL cars.
The plastic Kyosho RM motor mount and KM t-plate costed me only $6 as they were part of a larger oversea order. It's nice inexpensive fun!
This is Sammy and thanks for watching!
