What is the difference between PLC and DCS? A typical answer to this question is that the DCS as its name says is a Distributed Control System or in other words is a control method in which we have some independent PLCs.
Each PLC is in charge of controlling individual parts of the process so that if one fails, the other PLCs will continue performing their function without interruption.
On the other hand, what we see in practice is like PLC mostly used for centralized control, meaning that a single PLC (CPU) will control the whole process.
However, this answer sounds to be correct to some extent, in this video, you'll get some other decent answers to this question and we'll compare the PLC and DCS from different aspects, such as their hardware, software, programming languages, and so on.
