(22 Aug 2013) Veteran Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe was sworn in for another five year term on Thursday, following a disputed election on July 31.
The official results gave him a landslide victory, but the opposition allege widespread vote-rigging.
He took the oath of office at a 60,000 seater sports stadium in the capital Harare, which was almost filled to capacity with supporters singing, dancing and waving banners.
"We have been empowered, we have been given a project to do, we are really excited," one said.
Mugabe is 89 and has ruled Zimbabwe since independence in 1980.
The main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change, said in a statement that it would not attend the event, calling it "a robber's party."
The MDC last week dropped a bid to challenge the result via the courts, saying electoral authorities had refused to release details of voter rolls they claimed were stuffed with the names of the dead.
