A Plasser 09-3X dynamic Tamper and SSP302 ballast regulator, operating as ARTC infrastructure service 7M71V, had been stabled in the Gheringhap siding overnight. They are seen emerging from thick fog, running passed my location before reversing direction and quickly disappearing again.
The 09-3X Tamping Express has been specifically designed for the maintenance of high density lines and operation in short track possessions. It is capable of tamping three sleepers at a time; however, in areas of irregular sleeper spacing, it is quickly transformed to a single sleeper continuous tamping machine. The main functions of the 09-3X Tamping Express include levelling, lining and tamping, while additional functions (such as dynamic track stabilisation, ballast ploughing, sleeper end consolidation and track brooming) may be integrated within a single machine consist, if required.
The SSP302 is a high speed ballast regulator designed to operate in conjunction with a continuous action tamping machine. It is capable of performing all ballast profiling regulating and track brooming functions in a single continuous forward pass at a work rate compatible with that of a two sleeper continuous action tamping machine. The machine is fitted with a heavy duty cruciform main plough positioned between the axles of the machine. The shoulder ploughs are mounted immediately in front of the cruciform main plough to facilitate the flow of ballast from the shoulders and into the main plough for distribution along the track. The self-steering, high performance ballast broom, mounted on a single-axle trailer, sweeps excess ballast from the full width of sleepers and the fastenings onto a traverse conveyor within the broom housing (depositing the excess ballast onto either side of the track).
