In 1608, Hans Lipperhey invented the telescope in the Netherlands. News of this invention quickly spread throughout Europe. A short time later, Galileo Galilei built his own version of the telescope and used it to make observations of the sky. At the beginning of 1610, he discovered the four large moons of Jupiter, which clearly orbited Jupiter and not the Earth. The Earth could therefore not be the only centre of cosmic movements.
