Basic tips on how to grow Okra
1. Soil preparation: Okra thrives in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8. Prepare the soil by adding compost or well-rotted manure to the planting area.
2. Planting: Okra should be planted after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up to at least 21°C (70°F). Sow seeds 1-2 cm (0.5-1 inch) deep, with a spacing of 30-45 cm (12-18 inches) between plants.
3. Watering: Okra plants require regular watering, especially during dry spells. Water deeply once a week, providing about 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water per week.
4. Fertilization: Okra is a heavy feeder and benefits from regular fertilisation. Use a balanced fertiliser such as a 10-10-10 formula, applying it every 4-6 weeks.
5. Pest and disease control: Watch out for pests such as aphids, spider mites, and stink bugs, which can be controlled with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Common diseases include powdery mildew and verticillium wilt, which can be prevented by planting disease-resistant varieties and maintaining good air circulation.
6. Harvesting: Okra pods should be harvested when they are young and tender, usually when they are 7-10 cm (3-4 inches) long. Pick them every 1-2 days to encourage continued production.
7. Pruning: Pruning okra plants can promote branching and increase yields. Pinch off the growing tip of the main stem when the plant is about 30 cm (12 inches) tall to encourage side shoots.
