PROCESS:
Firstly I brushed the machete with a nylon brush to remove the loose rust. Once that was done, I decided to reshape the old handle that was already on the blade so it would have a much nicer fit. I started this by hand by released it would take years to get it down to where I wanted and opted instead for the belt sander. This made much easier work of the job.
Next was to remove the old handle by drilling out the old rivets. The bench drill made light work of this. Next was to hammer them out. Once out, I could now sand back the handle even more and remove the rust on the inner side of the handle. Now the blade was free it was time to place it in the electrolysis bath and leave for five hours at 10amps. During that time all of the rust was pulled off of the blade and transferred to two anodes.
Once it was out, I rubbed it down with steel wool and dried it with a rag. I then applied some oil and let it soak for an hour to ensure the blade didn't rust again. Whilst that sat, I set about drilling the new holes for the new rivets for the handle. I had to enlarge the inner and outer holes.
It was then time to polish the blade. I used metal polish and bench drill with a buffing wheel attached. (I'm getting a bench grinder very soon) Once shiny and looking great it was time to sharpen the edge. I did this using the Tormek stone.
It was then time to reassemble the machete. Once back together I added some linseed oil to seal the handle and blade. The restoration was then complete.
