During WWI and WWII the British scuttled many ships known as 'blockships' in the channels around Scapa Flow on the Orkney Islands. This was done to prevent German ships entering the bay and attacking the British fleet while it was at anchor.
Dozens of ships in total were scuttled and today remains of them can still be seen above the water line in the channels between the islands. Many more are hidden just below the surface and the depth ranges from a couple of meters to over 12m at some wrecks.
In 1939 HMS Royal Oak was sunk while at anchor in Scapa Flow by a German submarine which managed to navigate between the blockships. In response, Winston Churchill ordered the construction of permanent causeways to prevent any further attacks. The barriers are named in his honor.
During our dives the weather conditions were not the best and the visibility was pretty poor making it difficult to explore the wrecks underwater.
