Coaching arm-swing for sprinting
A lot of the athlete and coaches I talk to understand that the correct arm swing mechanics are important to track and field athletes. However, not many of them know how it assists sprinting.
The use of arm swing in jumping movements can increase jump performance by ~12%, this is due to the increased vertical displacement of the athletes centre of mass as they raise their arms above their head.
When running one arm is swinging forwards while the opposite swing backwards so there is no actual gain in horizontal velocity. Instead both arm "punch" upwards at the same time increasing vertical displacement and allowing for a greater stride length. There is also a relationship between movement patterns of the arm and opposite leg. This relationship is used as a counter rotation, allowing the trunk to stay neutral and prevent unwanted rotational movements.
