STEP BY STEP GUIDE
I’m logged into Google and in my Gmail inbox.
Did you know that when you delete an email in Gmail it isn’t immediately removed from your Gmail account?
If I delete this email from my inbox, Gmail confirms that the conversation has been moved to Trash
But all that has actually happened is that the email has been moved from my inbox folder to a folder called Trash
The email can still be found and read in the Gmail account.
Let me show you how easy it is to find and I’ll also explain how to permanently delete that email.
1 - All of the folders in Gmail can be found in the left hand bar next to your inbox. You’ll see that the trash folder can be found near the top of that list.
2 - Lets click into that folder
3 - The email we just deleted is shown. This email can still be clicked into and read like any other email in Gmail
4 - What actually happens when you delete an email is that the mail is moved temporarily into your trash folder
And, as the message at the top of the trash page confirms, the emails will only be permanently deleted after 30 days from the date when they are added to this folder.
During those 30 days, a deleted email can be found and read by anyone who has access to your Gmail account.
5 - To completely remove a deleted email from your Gmail account
You can do this by moving your mouse to the top of this page
And by clicking on the Empty Trash Now link
If you are using a UK version of Gmail, this link may be called Empty Bin now but it will do the same thing.
6 - If I now click on that link, a window pops up that asks you to confirm that you want to permanently delete these emails from your Gmail account.
To confirm that click on the large blue OK button
7 - Gmail will then confirm that all messages have been deleted
And these have now been permanently removed from your Gmail account.
