Hi everyone, Aiden here at etrailer.com and today we're gonna be taking a look at the Yakima HighRoad roof mounted bike rack here on our 2020 Toyota RAV4. Now, a roof mounted bike rack is gonna be a way to haul your bike on your roof. As opposed to a hitch-mounted bike rack, there are some advantages to that. You can leave your hitch open for other accessories. So, whether you're going on a trip with your family, you wanna have a cargo carrier out there for extra space or maybe you're towing a small trailer. You wanna have that space open but still haul your bike.
You can do that with a roof-mounted bike carrier. Now, there are some also downsides to it, is the added height to your vehicle and the fact that you have to load a bike up over your head and it can be a little bit awkward. So, it just comes down to how you wanna use your vehicle and what's gonna work best for you. But this one, I think it's gonna be a really solid pick for roof-mounted bike racks. It is a wheel mount, so it's gonna hold your bike by the front tire, making it safe for our carbon frame bikes because we don't have any frame contact.
And then also, you don't have to remove that front wheel for storage. They do make some versions of this that you have to remove that front tire and you mount it in the forks. So, it just comes down to how you wanna haul your bike. If you wanna just keep it one piece, this is a good way to go. I'm gonna go ahead and hop up there just to get a better look at what we've got going on.
I do recommend using something like the Moki Doorstep or a Tire Step, just to make it easier to get up there. That's what we're using today because when you're working with something up high like this, it just makes it a lot easier. You don't have to step all over your seats and stuff. Now, if we see here, we've got these two arms that are holding our front tire in place and then at the back, we've got this Wheel Strap. This is adjustable along these tracks, so, depending on your wheel base, you can make this work for a lot of different bikes.
You also have a 45 pound weight capacity with this. So, even for your bigger mountain bikes, I think it's gonna work out really well. I personally wouldn't wanna max it out because again, 45 pounds above your head on a RAV4 isn't gonna be easy to load and unload. So, it just comes down to your personal preference with that. There are some spots on the carrier right here. We've got a loop for a cable lock that we can add. And we've got a couple of different spots on the carrier, like right here on this latch and at the back of the carrier where there's another cable lock, I'll pop down and kind of show that. That pops out and you can use it to lock up your bike more. So, you can add lock cores to secure this or you can just add your own cable lock right here, whatever works best for you. Let's go ahead and get this bike removed real quick. I'm gonna go ahead and take off the wheel strap first. So, on the other side, there's another one of these little levers. So, you're gonna just push that in and pull the strap out all the way there and then oughta do the same thing right here, just to make sure that there isn't anything in my way right here. I wanna make as clear of a path as I can when I'm unloading this. Now, at this point, I'd recommend putting a hand on your bike. You wanna make sure you have a good steady hold here and we'll come to this knob here. If I twist that to the left, that's gonna loosen this back arm right here. You can see if I twist it to the right, it kind of moves in, you see it kind of pushing on the tire there. That's it's gonna press it into this front wheel hoop. So, I'll just loosen that up and kind of roll the bike back, loosen it a little bit more so I can fully lower this down. Now, the bike is kind of free. I'm gonna go ahead and grab it right there and very carefully, step down. So, it's a little bit tricky getting that bike down. You have to be confident and I'd maybe recommend having a second set of hands to hand the bike off to, just because that is a little bit sketchy to do on your own. And then, we can just go ahead and fold this one down right he
