In this video I demonstrate how to restore a vintage bicycle saddle. This Dunlop M15 rubber bike saddle is from my 1950 Raleigh "Dawn Tourist" vintage bike that I am currently restoring. As the saddle is more than 70 years old it is very stiff and could break if I tried to ride on it right away.
At some point in the past, someone has painted over the saddle clamp and rails, including the nuts, probably to protect it from rust after the chrome plating has come away. In order to restore this saddle I am going to have to first strip the paint.
After stripping the paint and removing the rust using Evaporust, I apply several treatments of Belvoir Leather Balsam, an oil which soaks into the saddle and makes it supple again and enriches the colour of the saddle.
In the next video, I'll be taking this saddle for a test ride to see how well it holds up!
