Grace Bumbry is an American Opera mezzo soprano who began as a mezzo then transitioned to a period singing as a top soprano and then back to a mezzo later in her career. Bumbry was known for her wide vocal range, a dynamic and rich voice and a beautiful, sonorous tone. Her voice was versatile, agile, flexible and also suited for the bel canto technique. Some of her major mezzo-soprano roles were in “Les Troyens”, “Hérodiade”, “ Orfeo” , "Carmen" and “Telemaco”. Her roles as a soprano included “Salome”, “L'Africaine”, “Norma”, “Le Cid”, “Tannhäuser”, “Ernani”, “Il trovatore”, “La forza del destino”, and “Turandot”. She later became a noted as a highly successful interpreter of lieder. In 2009, she was honored at the Kennedy Center Honors, for her contribution to the performing arts.
