Developments so far in the field of artificial intelligence have been closely interwoven with colonialisation issues. Existing social prejudices are made more acute and inequalities are intensified. The Indigenous Protocol and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Working Group was founded in 2019 and counters this negative narrative with the development of new conceptual and practical strategies for approaching the design of AI systems. The truth is that AI offers, among other things, an opportunity to think about humans and non-humans in new and different ways, and to adopt a less anthropocentric perspective. How can discussion about the role of technology in society be extended beyond the largely culturally homogeneous research labs and the start-up culture of Silicon Valley? And how can indigenous perspectives contribute to the global discussion about AI?
