“What inspired me to give birth at my advanced age is that I had failed to conceive during my younger years and I had no children of my own until I grew old. All the children I kept raising over the years, I had none, and when they grew up they left me alone, that is why I decided to look for my own children.”

“Given her age factor, you can’t expect her to have eggs. We expect that generally by 45 years old, we expect the eggs of a lady to be no more. Remember these ladies are born with eggs, by 45 we expect the eggs are no more, so this lady didn’t have her own eggs, so we had to use a suitable donor egg.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Isaac Chebet, doctor:
“We, as the hospital, we also believe that age is just a number, but we have to go ahead and do the assessment. We started by doing the basic things. Number one: assessing her (blood) pressure. We have been monitoring her pressure all through and it has a normal pressure. Number two: we looked at also her sugar levels. Her sugar levels have relatively been normal. We went ahead and assessed other organs, the liver, the kidneys and we noticed that she was okay. She didn’t have any issues with the back, so we noticed that she is able to carry the pregnancy.”

14. SOUNDBITE (Luganda) Safina Namukwaya, 70-year-old new mother:
“This pregnancy with the twins took a toll on me. I didn’t have energy and I could not work or do anything. Even the work I used to do I could no longer do by myself and I had no one to help me.”

16. SOUNDBITE (Luganda) Safina Namukwaya (correct), niece of Safina Namukwaya who now looks after her:
“At first, I didn’t believe it and it took me a long while to believe that she could get pregnant and give birth and when they told me, I didn’t take it seriously. But when she produced the first child, then I started believing that she could now do it and we prayed to God to give her twins and we are glad she got them.”

STORYLINE:
A 70-year-old woman in Uganda has given birth to twins after receiving fertility treatment, making her one of the world’s oldest new mothers.
Safina Namukwaya gave birth to a boy and a girl on Wednesday via cesarean section at a medical centre in the capital, Kampala.
The Women’s Hospital International & Fertility Centre is also where Namykwaya received in vitro fertilization treatment.
One of her doctors said that the success of the treatment showed that age was "just a number."
Namukwaya could not afford the expensive fees herself, but the hospital director offered her free treatment.
