COURSE DESCRIPTION
In an article for The New York Times, David Brooks reported that young people today were incapable of identifying a moral dilemma. “When asked to describe a moral dilemma they had faced,” Brooks wrote, “two-thirds of the young people either couldn’t answer the question or described problems that are not moral at all, like whether they could afford to rent a certain apartment or whether they had enough quarters to feed the meter at a parking spot.” Apart from a few extreme cases, like murder and rape, many interviewees simply lacked practice in dealing with right and wrong. Instead, their default response was “it depends on the individual.” This course will expose students to moral dilemmas and explore a number of frameworks that could help them identify how to make ethical choices in their day to day lives. As NAIS magazine put it, “educators know that preparing students for the next level of schooling has its value, but that a quality education in this century must focus on life beyond school — on deep learning, engagement with the world, citizenship, and, ultimately, fulfilling work. This course will explore the question of how we redefine “the good life” today, and how education can support it.
