POLICE MOVE AGAINST DEMONSTRATORS IN INDEPENDENCE SQUARE IN KIEV, UKRAINE.
USING WATER CANNONS AND STUN GRENADES, UKRAINIAN RIOT POLICE PRESSED THE SPRAWLING PROTEST CAMP IN THE CENTER OF THE CAPITAL CITY.

AT LEAST NINE PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND SCORES INJURED DURING A DAY OF VIOLENCE.
AS DARKNESS FELL, RIOT POLICE VOWED TO BRING ORDER TO THE STREETS AND CLOSED DOWNTOWN SUBWAY STATIONS.

AN EVENING DEADLINE TO CLEAR THE SQUARE CAME AND WENT.
ONCE THE DEADLINE WAS ANNOUNCED, THOUSANDS MORE PROTESTERS STREAMED TO THE SQUARE TO DEFEND THE CAMP.
AND THEN POLICE MOVED IN WITH WATER CANNON AND STUN GRENADES.

DEMONSTRATORS HURLED PAVING STONES AT POLICE AND SET VEHICLES ON FIRE.
POLICE RETALIATED FIRING STUN GRENADES AND WHAT APPEARED TO BE SMALL METAL BALLS.
THE CLASHES DIMMED HOPES FOR ANY EARLY SOLUTION TO THE POLITICAL CRISIS.
