Last month we welcomed Gabriella and her two horses, Max and Buzz, to the Forest to extract coppiced hazel from our woodlands.
Horse logging is a traditional, low-impact method of timber extraction that is effective for harvesting everything from coppice products to final crop saw logs, using a range of traditional and modern tools.
The benefits of horse logging include:
• Low impact on the environment, making it especially suitable for sensitive woodlands with delicate ground flora
• Little to no soil compaction, maintaining soil quality and preventing erosion
• Access to challenging or sensitive sites that are difficult for heavy machinery to reach
• Enables highly selective silvicultural management, allowing timber to be carefully extracted between standing trees without causing damage to them
• Reduces dependence on infrastructure, such as hard-standing tracks and costly machinery
