The U-Joints in my 2012 Wrangler JKU were binding on the street and popping while in 4WD. After some digging and diagnostics, the axle U-Joints were the source of the noise. This video also explains how to determine if you have the 5-760x or 5-7166x U-joints in your JK Dana 30 axle.
Changing the diff oil after servicing the axles is always a good idea, so any contaminants that were in the axle tubes that got pushed into the diff get flushed out.
