"Highway Bridge Fire Damage Experiences and Fire Resilience Considerations for Bridges with FRP."
This presentation was cosponsored by NEx at ACI Fall Convention 2023 in Boston and was delivered by Steve Nolan, Senior Structures Design Engineer at the Florida Department of Transportation.
Highway Bridges are occasionally subject to intense fires from various sources that typically result in severe damage and potential collapse. Since bridges are unoccupied structures, there are no standard fire resistance provisions in the AASHTO bridge code. Owner agencies typically rely on local experience or do not even consider this potential extreme event load case due to the perceived low probability of occurrence and the inherent resilience of concrete to short term fire effects. Typical examples of recent experiences with fires above and under bridges, and the relating damage will be presented, highlight the differences perhaps with conventional building design fire resistance and potential considerations for bridge designed with FRP reinforcing or members.
