Are you unsure what plants to grow in your garden that you share with your flock of chickens? I’ll give you some tips to start you off in the right direction!
In my video you'll see my garden in 2020, some plants have been establishing for 2 years or less, some are newly planted.

Once plants are established they need to have at least one of these characteristics!
1. Dense ground foliage. The plant protects its own roots from the chickens digging and scratching. Examples in my garden are Day Lilies and Chives.
2. Fast growing. The chickens can happily help themselves and, like Sage, it keeps growing back plus more!
3. Spreads easily. The more of the plant there is, the less possibility of the chickens tipping the balance of it’s survival by eating or digging too much, such as Crocosmia
4. Height. Once the plant grows above the height a chicken can jump, the leaves and fruit will continue to thrive. Examples in my garden are Currants, Raspberries, Grapes, and Sunflowers.
5. Toxic leaves. By instinct a chicken will mostly leave alone plants that we know are toxic to animals. Such as rhubarb leaves and foxgloves. As long as the chickens have access to good food and other safe plants, then they will leave toxic ones alone, with only the occasional leaf pecking.
Depending where you live in the world, the types of plants that thrive naturally in your climate will differ from someone else. Choose plants that are robust for your climate, and I don’t necessarily mean native plants, just plants that thrive in your region.
