What are the most dangerous driving environments? It is for sure that dense fog would be one of the answers.
Statistics from the FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) in the United States indicate that about 31,385 traffic accidents are caused by dense fog each year, with 511 deaths and 11,812 injuries. In 2017, driving in the dense fog caused 11,090 deaths in India. These figures show we must not underestimate the danger of driving in dense fog.
Here we provide four tips for safe driving in dense fog to avoid car accidents:
1. Take your time. When the weather condition is bad, slow down. It is better late than have a car accident in a hurry.
2. Use fog lights. Mostly in color yellow or red, fog lights can effectively reduce the scattering of fog and shine through to ensure vehicles in front and behind can see you.
3. Make the safe distance longer. A long safe distance and reduced speed would ensure your driving safety.
4. Make good use of road studs. Lane markings are difficult to identify in fog, especially white ones. Compared with lane markings, road studs collect and reflect lights better so that drivers could effectively identify and predict the direction to prevent accidents.
Extreme weather takes place more and more often every year. To protect all the road users, drivers should drive more carefully, in the meantime enough traffic safety items, such as road studs, should be installed on the roads.
