The mathematical definition of a moment (i.e. its equation) is perpendicular distance x force (see illustration below...the blue circle represents the pivot axis). For example, if your arm is 2 feet long, and you are holding a 10 lb weight, the moment created would be 2 feet x 10 lb = 20 ft-lb (pronounced 20 foot pounds). As you can see from the equation, a moment increases with distance and with force: the further away (from the pivot axis) the force is applied, and the greater that force is, the greater the moment will be.
