LEAD IN:
A thousand monks from 260 wats (Buddhist temples) across Thailand have gathered on the island of Phuket to pay homage to their elders and collect alms (food).
Some of the donated food will be distributed to poor southern regions which have suffered from years of violence between police and Islamic rebels.
STORYLINE:
Alms giving is an important part of Thai culture and buddhist monks can regularly be seen on the streets at dawn, collecting alms for their own temples, but a spectacle on this scale is rarely seen.
Even before dawn broke lines of monks in their colourful orange robes could be seen praying with people and collecting food in their special alms, or begging bowls, the only property they are allowed to own.
Khun Phanich Thongnark is from the Middle Way Meditation which helped to organise the event.
She says they invited the thousand monks participating in today's event from temples in Phuket and nearby provinces like Phang Nga and Krabi.
