It's a great question... how does someone like me (an independent videographer) make money?
It starts with this... a need. In order to make money as a videographer there has to be a need.
A client has a need...
- They need to advertise (new product, new location)
- They need to educate (how to use a product or how to do something, orientation for a school)
- They need to tell a story (like an event recap or behind the scenes content)
- They need to entertain Making money as a videographer has to start with a need.
If there's not a need for a video then a sale won't occur. So when you're talking to people ... you have to identify the needs. You have to listen for the needs. And speak to those.
I recently spoke to a home builder who needs to show a new development of houses. His NEED is to show his work or advertise what him and his team is capable of. There's not a better way to showcase that than video. So his need to showcase their work = OPPORTUNITY.
Then I estimate the price for that job... I consider things like:
- Time (how long am going to work on the project both filming, editing, revising, and travel around town)
- Operational expense - gas, storage for the files, Adobe subscription
- Variables: music licensing, graphics, renting gear All of that informs what my estimated price is and then I send that in a document form to the potential client.
And I try to do this ASAP. As soon as someone says they're interested in a quote I get them a quote that day.
URGENCY is key. Urgency tells people you care. and people respect that. Then be the most reliable videographer. I'm serious.
Compete with other videographers by being the MOST RELIABLE. Clients hire people they trust and people they can depend on. Even more so than the best videographer. So dedicate yourself to being reliable.
