Have you ever consider fishing with a drone? This little insect is the perfect solution if you tie a fly that resembles both the adult stage or larval stage you will no doubt be successful. The Drone Fly or Eristalis tenax is a species of hoverfly found around much of the world. They are found around gardens, meadows, and other open habitats. They do not sting or bite making it a harmless and beneficial insect. They closely resemble a honeybee, having a black and yellow-striped abdomen, but are larger in size and lacking sting. They have transparent wings, a stout body, and the ability to hover in mid-air. When they are in the larval stage, Drone Flies are aquatic and prefer stagnant nutrient rich water, like ponds, ditches, and sewage lagoons. They are known as rat-tailed maggots or mousse’s because of a long, retractable breathing tube at the tip of their abdomen, allowing them to breathe while submerged. Even though they look menacing, rat-tailed maggots like the adults are harmless, feeding on algae, decaying vegetation and so on. These larvae, if you can find them, work great as an alternative to maggots while ice fishing in the winter.
