shabby chic how to hand paint furniture, shabby chic serpent edge table in pastel
reproduction serpent edge table gets the shabby chic treatment. base colour is annie sloan grey chalk paint then a coat of johnstones green emulsion a final third coat of johnstones blue angel gives this project a duck egg appearance.
using household emulsion paint shows that you dont always require branded paints speciffically designed for furniture painting however i would reccomend a good quality base coat and chalk paint is ideal for this.
preperation is key to most if not all painted surfaces and furniture is no exeption!
clean the project to remove any residual grime or polish then i always prefer to use wet and dry sandpaper as this prevents airborne contaminents very important when preparing old furniture as you must assume that there could possibly be some lead addatives in the old paint.
once sanded clean again and use a painters tac cloth to lift any fine particles of dust before painting.
i used just one brush which is a proform white china bristle angle sash from just £3.48 these are very soft natural bristle ideal for painting the uneven pokey rounded mixture of surface area you may encounter on your furniture painting projects these type of brushes wear quickly and wash out well so are great for frequent use.
the three coats of paint appled were finished in one dry warm day and allowed to dry overnight before the distressing was done.
I tend to use foam wet and dry pads which are a fine grade ideal for gentle wearing through the paint layers to create the graduated distressed finish you see
you also see me using a coin edge to scrape away some paint this is to stop me sanding away too many layers of the surrounding paint edges to reveal the original wood surface.
the table was then wiped and waxed with annie sloan clear soft wax to protect the painted surface, allowing the wax to dry before buffing to a smooth finish, you may want to do this process a few times to achieve a good layer of wax for a quality finish.
