Who was Sarojini Naidu?
Sarojini Naidu, also known by the sobriquet as the 'Nightingale of India', was a prominent Indian political leader, poet, and a key figure in India's struggle for independence from colonial rule. She was born on February 13, 1879, in Hyderabad, India.
Here are some key highlights from her life:
**Educational Accomplishments:** Sarojini Naidu was a bright student. At the age of 12, she achieved national fame when she topped the matriculation examination at Madras University. With a scholarship to study overseas, she went on to study at King's College London and later at Girton College, Cambridge.
**Literary Work:** Sarojini Naidu was also an acclaimed poet. Her work was well-regarded for its beautiful imagery and emotional intensity. She wrote several collections of poetry, including "The Golden Threshold" (1905), "The Bird of Time" (1912), and "The Broken Wing" (1917), which were admired both in India and abroad.
**Political Career:** Naidu was deeply involved in the Indian independence movement. She joined the Indian National Congress, and in 1925, she was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress, becoming the first Indian woman to hold the post. She also worked closely with Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru in the freedom struggle.
**Role Post-Independence:** After India gained its independence in 1947, Sarojini Naidu was appointed as the Governor of the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh), making her the first woman governor in the history of India.
**Death:** Sarojini Naidu passed away on March 2, 1949.
