RIP LEGO Mindstorms – the oldest current LEGO theme is set to be discontinued at the end of the 2022. Over twenty years of being the cool LEGO robotics set that your rich friend has, but that your parents wouldn’t ever buy for you because it was just too expensive.
The death of Mindstorms brings to the forefront one of the big challenges facing LEGO fans in the digital era: the final set in the range, 51515 Robot Inventor, requires a mobile app which, according to the LEGO Group, will remain live, quote, “until at least the end of 2024” – which means that after 2024, this £300 LEGO set will be functionally useless (or at least a real headache to get to work).
Mindstorms, then, is another reminder that while bricks may last forever, LEGO software has a painfully short shelf life.
