Arguably, the two most affordable parts to upgrade yourself versus using a manufacturer is disk space, and RAM. Dell, for example, often charges around $350 for 32GB of RAM. This same RAM can be purchased from an online retailer for $120 or less.
So, save some cash, and do the upgrade yourself! Usually you can get a good deal on the CPU and GPU with a computer, but it is the hard drives and RAM that give these companies mad cash.
