Learn to tie the Guide Deceiver Fly with Josh Smeltzer from Musky Fool Fly Fishing Co. This fly is a simple, effective, easy to cast, virtually weedless/snagless and robust design that is very quick to tie and uses a small amount of materials... hence why guides like this style of fly. (Not to mention it lends itself nicely for beginning fly tiers!) The design offers a lot of versatility and can easily be scaled up or down and color coordinated to the forage base of your fishery or personal preference.
Things to keep in mind while tying these up... Watch out for the hook point! If you find yourself getting poked put a small piece of foam over it to protect your hand. Slowly layer in and veil materials as you move towards the head. There isn't too much shank to tie on to so as always pull off the right amount of synthetics to add volume and shape but not too much that it get's too bulky. If tied properly you shouldn't need to give it a haircut at the end, just some light trimming for it's first dinner date.
This fly is best suited for fishing with intermediate lines on 7-9 wt. rods in heavy covered areas such as weeds, pads, timber and other debris. You can expect to catch all sorts of fish on this pattern but this particular size is targeted towards musky and pike on small rivers and lakes.
We encourage you to experiment with this pattern by changing up the colors of synthetics, add flash if you want to and just have fun making it your own for the fish in your area.
