The United States has been involved in various conflicts throughout its history, and submarines have played an important role in some of these conflicts. In modern times, submarines continue to play a crucial role in the US military's defense strategy.
During World War II, submarines were used by the US Navy to disrupt enemy supply lines and sink enemy ships. In the Cold War era, submarines were a critical part of the US's nuclear deterrent strategy.

1. Seawolf-class Submarine: The Seawolf-class submarine is a nuclear-powered fast attack submarine that was designed to operate in extreme conditions and conduct covert missions. It is known for its quietness, speed, and agility, as well as its advanced sensors and weapons systems.
The boats of the Seawolf class are the most advanced but also the most expensive hunter-killer submarines in the world.
The Seawolf class boats were intended to seek and destroy the latest Soviet ballistic missile submarines, such as Typhoon class, and latest attack submarines such as Akula class. Initially 12 boats of the class were planned. However, these advanced submarines were too pricey even for the United States to build and maintain on the post-Cold War era budget. Eventually production was stopped with only three Seawolf class submarines built. All of these boats are currently in service. The US Navy switched to much cheaper design of Virginia class attack submarines. With speed of 37 km/h to 65 km/h and length of 353 feet, it has unlimited range of travel with endurance limited to food supplies and test depth of 1600 feet deep.

2. Virginia-class Submarine: The Virginia-class submarine is a nuclear-powered fast attack submarine that is currently in service with the United States Navy. It is considered one of the most advanced and versatile submarines in the world, with advanced sensors and weapons systems, as well as the ability to launch Tomahawk missiles. The Virginia class submarines are fitted with 12 Vertical Launch System (VLS) tubes. These are used to launch Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles with a range of 1 700 km. It has test depth of greater than 800 feet with speed of 45 km/h. With length of 377 feet, it has unlimited range with endurance depending on food supplies.
3. Los Angeles-class Submarine: The Los Angeles class of submarines are nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (SSN) in service with the United States Navy. Also known as the 688 class after 62 were built from 1972 to 1996, the latter 23 to an improved 688i standard. As of 2022, 26 of the Los Angeles class remain in commission—more than any other class in the world—and they account for more than half of the U.S. Navy's 50 fast attack submarines. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the top speed of the submarines of the Los Angeles class is over 25 knots (46 km/h; 29 mph), although the actual maximum is classified. Some published estimates have placed their top speed at 30 to 33 knots (56 to 61 km/h; 35 to 38 mph) with length of 362 feet and test depth of 1480 feet. It has endurance of approximately 90 days with food supplies.
4. Columbia-class Submarine: The Columbia-class submarine (formerly known as the Ohio Replacement Submarine) is an upcoming class of nuclear submarines designed to replace the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines in the United States Navy. The first submarine began construction on 1 October 2020, and is scheduled to enter service in 2031. Each submarine will have 16 missile tubes, each carrying one Trident II D5LE missile. The submarines will be 560 feet long with speed of 37km/h and diving depth of 800+ feet. Columbia class submarines will have endurance of approximately 90 days with food supplies.
5. Ohio-class Submarine: The Ohio class of nuclear-powered submarines includes the United States Navy's 14 ballistic missile submarines and its four cruise missile submarines. Ohio-class boats carry more missiles than either the Borei class (16, 20 by the Borei II) or the Typhoon class. The Ohio-class submarine was designed for extended strategic deterrent patrols. Each submarine is assigned two complete crews, called the Blue crew and the Gold crew, each typically serving 70-to-90-day deterrent patrols. The Ohio class was designed in the 1970s to carry the concurrently designed Trident submarine-launched ballistic missile. Ohio class submarine has length of 560 feet and speed of 22 km/h with test depth of +800 feet. It has endurance of approximately 60 days with food supplies.
