Researchers at the University of Reading carried out the first ever in-depth analysis of the ability of the latest ECMWF seasonal forecasting system to predict when the Indian summer monsoon will start and how much rain will fall.
Dr Amulya Chevuturi and Dr Andy Turner in the Department of Meteorology explain the study and why its findings could provide important early forecasts for farmers and other sectors that rely on water availability.
