The Battle of the Masurian Lakes, fought from September 7 to 14, 1914, was a significant conflict on the Eastern Front during World War I. It involved German and Russian forces and was a follow-up to the earlier Battle of Tannenberg.
After their defeat at Tannenberg in late August 1914, the Russian First Army, commanded by General Paul von Rennenkampf, retreated eastward towards the Masurian Lakes in East Prussia. The German Eighth Army, under General Paul von Hindenburg and his chief of staff, General Erich Ludendorff, sought to capitalize on their previous victory by pursuing Rennenkampf’s forces and eliminating the threat to East Prussia.
