Here's Hum's classic mega hit Stars, from the classic 1995 album, You'd Prefer an Astronaut! Although this record was released alongside a multitude of records labelled alternative music, this record was uncharacteristically heavy for that genre, and retrospectively is probably more of a space rock/shoegaze record. In any case, it was one of the first heavy records I got really into, and this track, Stars, is particularly brilliant!
This song is in drop D tuning, but unlike a multitude of its contemporary drop D tracks, most of the riffs utilize the low D string for open string droning, or as in the opening riff, transforming a D5 powerchord into a Gadd9. Matching the intensity of the guitars and fuzzed out bass, the drums are quite aggressively performed, particularly in the chaotic last 4 bars of the heavy bridge section.
For tracking, I used my usual drum setup, and tracked the bass straight into Reaper using the SHB-1 plugin into the Neumann U-87 God's Cab IR. All guitars were double tracked played through the Fender Cybertwin amp mic'd up with a Shure sm57. I was particularly happy with how heavy the Tweed setting on Cybertwin tracked, once again leveraging slightly less distortion than I used to typically think was required for a heavy guitar tone. Vocals were tracked with the sm57 also, and I'm not going to lie, alot of pitch correction was applied because I suck at singing!
Anyway, let me know what you think of the production, I thought this was one of the best mixes I've ever gotten for a track. If you liked what you heard, comment below and subscribe to the channel!
