Kanban is a visual system for managing work as it moves through a process. Kanban visualizes both the process (the workflow) and the actual work passing through that process. The goal of Kanban is to identify potential bottlenecks in your process and fix them so work can flow through it cost-effectively at an optimal speed or throughput.
Kanban is a Japanese term which literally means signboard or billboard. Kanban is basically a visual system for managing work that is moving through a process. It was developed by Taiichi Ohno, an industrial engineer at Toyota during the 1940s.
Kanban helps you harness the power of visual information by using sticky notes on a whiteboard to create a “picture” of your work using three columns, “To-do”, “Doing” & “Done”.
Kanban method uses a set of principles and practices for managing and improving the flow of work. It is an evolutionary method that promotes gradual improvements to an organization’s processes. The Four core principles of Kanban are:
1. Visualizing the Workflow
2. Limit WIP (Work In Progress)
3. Managing Work Flow
4. Continuous Improvement & Collaboration
The main objective of the Kanban system is the smooth flow of work from start to completion without unnecessary slowdown or stoppage.
Kanban gradually improves whatever you do, whether software development, IT/ Ops, Staffing, Recruitment, Marketing and Sales, Procurement etc. Almost any business function can benefit from applying Kanban to bring about significant benefits such as reduced lead time, increased throughput and much higher quality of products or services delivered.
